The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show nears, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
