Seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
