British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
